In onze serie "het beste nummer van..." proberen we een nummer te kiezen dat in essentie alle sterke kanten van een artiest of band in zich samenbalt.

Het beste nummer van Bob Dylan vinden we op Highway 61 Revisited, de eerste studioplaat waarop Dylan zich met een elektrische band omringde. Dat leverde lekker felle nummers op, die een breuk betekenden met de folk-Dylan die zichzelf alleen op gitaar en mondharmonica begeleidde. Desolation Row, het nummer waar we het over hebben, is dan weer een uitzondering, want we horen Dylan zingen met een begeleiding van hemzelf op slaggitaar en Charlie McCoy, die op een akoestische gitaar een pittig maar fijn tapijtje weeft. Dat betekent dat dit het enige nummer op de plaat is waar je géén elektrische gitaar hoort, maar je hebt toch het gevoel dat Dylan zich hier ergens tussen folk en rock bevindt. Het liedje is ijzersterk, en ruim elf minuten lang - Dylan was in deze periode zeer geïnspireerd, en schreef een tekst die enigszins absurdistisch en surrealistisch aandoet, maar waarin hij wel een paar ijzersterke beelden oproept.
Alle sterke kanten van de folkzanger Dylan, de liedjesschrijver, de poëet, de rockzanger en de gedreven muziekvernieuwer komen hier samen.
Op Highway 61 Revisited staan overigens meer klassiekers als Like A Rolling Stone en Ballad Of A Thin Man, waarin Dylan laat horen dat hij hier op zijn scherpst was.
