In onze serie "het beste nummer van..." proberen we een nummer te kiezen dat in essentie alle sterke kanten van een artiest of band in zich samenbalt.

 Het beste nummer van Muddy Waters, in de allerbeste uitvoering, staat op zijn plaat uit 1977 (gemaakt toen hij vijfenzestig was), Hard Again. Mannish Boy klinkt hier scherper, feller en beter dan ooit, en dat is voor een deel te danken aan gitarist en producer Johnny Winter, die hier ook als aanjager fungeert - zijn opzwepende kreten tussendoor houden de meester scherp. Wat je hier hoort is niet alleen Muddy Waters op zijn best, maar ook de elektrische blues op zijn allerbest. Veel opwindender dan dit zul je het niet snel vinden.

Winters zette Waters in een opnamestudio van één kamer groot, samen met blueslegendes als gitarist Pinetop Perkins, drummer Willie Smith en gitarist James Cotton, aangevuld met Johnny Winter zelf, die niet alleen fantastisch gitaar speelt, maar die ook haarfijn aanvoelt hoe de muziek van Waters gespeeld moet worden - rauw en fel. Dit is misschien wel de beste bluesplaat ooit, en Mannish Boy springt er dan nog een keer extra uit.
